MODERN KID - ISSUE #1

I feel lucky to be a part of the growing families of many of my clients who have children or while in the process of working together share the great news of a baby on the way. 4 years ago, it was very challenging to find the right resources as to finding modern solutions for our modern kids.

I appreciate all of those who say it's hard to live an uncluttered life with kids and struggle with finding solutions for organized play. Designers today now offer design at all levels to help us keep sane with the chaos of toys, art supplies, play and messy eating. Here are a few of my favorites for excellent design, function, quality and value.

MODERN - PLAY
Life of the MODERN KID ... what better way to celebrate strength than to pick up a boulder and jump ... sculptural art pieces that bring a bit of the outdoors and nature into our interiors, who says you have to have the chaos of bold primary colors to play with. Enjoy over scaled proportions of natural objects in the home. Inspired by the calm of a Japanese rock garden but worried about how to make your home “child friendly” consider a playful alternative of integrating a rock garden within the home that is sophisticated in the use of materials and color palette.

SMARIN DESIGN - "LIVINGSTONES" - life size boulders and rocks made for exploring

MODERN - EAT
High chairs can be the worst crumb collector with the intricate details of piping and stitching, not really taking into consideration the maintenance of cleaning or durability of standing up to a baby bouncing in his high chair time over time. Vinyl seats that eventually discolor or crack to complicated hardware that is not only childproof but as well adult proof.

The "Fresco" - Bloom feeding and resting chair by Bloombaby. Want to bring a signature peice of furniture into your home, here is an excellent example of a beautifully designed product which not only provides function but looks great for every modern home.

MODERN - NURSERY
For those who love the classic modern furniture, what a great way to be able to coordinate some of your favorite pieces with the perfect modern nursery furniture ... Ooba offers the "Nest collection" in walnut which compliments perfectly the original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman white leather by herman miller.

MODERN - FUNNY
Who says pottey training needs to be soo serious, a playful fun approach to helping the little ones.

MODERN - WEBSITES
The Internet offers many online MODERN baby resources. In the past few years, online shopping not only offers over night shipping, no line-ups, white glove deliveries plus gift-wrapping. For all of you who hesitate to shop on line, with a little bit of reading and research on what lifestyle choices are important to you, I offer to share with you through my personal experience with clients, some great resources that come highly recommended.

MODERN FURNITURE - ISSUE #1 - VANCOUVER

WHEN SEARCHING FOR MODERN FURNITURE STORES IN VANCOUVER, THE MUST GO SHOWROOMS START HERE ... and for those of us who appreciate the power of sourcing on the internet, showrooms I love have recently revamped their websites making it all the more easier to shop without the headache of parking or waiting. Key tip to shopping is to browse through the store websites and get a feel for what you like best. Always come prepared with measurements of your space and a digital camera to take notes. Since many of the local stores carry a large variety of product lines and there isn't enough floor space to display them all - invest into an opportunity of working with an interior designer to help streamline your search.

MODERN ART + FOOD - ISSUE #1 - NEW YORK

THE MOMA - THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, NYC
www.moma.org

Experience modern art in this beautiful structure where walls intersect and float amidst frameless glass panels. The play of natural light and the volume of space create subtle transitions between exhibits. Attention to details in use of materials and seamless integration of crisp graphics & signage ... it is amazing to see the use of drywall reveals and planes in their simplest form.

THE MODERN
LOUNGE & FORMAL DINING OVERLOOKING OUTDOOR COURTYARD
www.themodernnyc.com

Upon entry, the time and careful design of a slight curved corridor back lit by a frosted wall of light leads you to the main lounge and opens up into a sophisticated arrangement of seating. In contrast to the casual seating of the lounge, towards the back of the restaurant lies the formal dining room overlooking the inner courtyard gardens of the MOMA. The calm of the silent garden made up of cantilevered carrera marble slabs and a play of multi-layered planes ... you dine to the quiet of the white courtyard ... the statues graze the garden as proud focal points. It is an experience to feel the thought behind the details as you sit for dinner and have food intricately planned ... served to you are pieces of art awaiting for your taste palette from the detail of the place setting.
